Youth Xchange: Assessment Procedure

Your application

Although you don’t need any particular skills or qualifications to apply, your application form must tell us why you want to take part in the programme and show that you understand the aims and the basic structure of the programme.

Scheduling an assessment day

If your initial application is successful, we’ll invite you to an assessment day.

Your assessment day will normally be held during a 3 month period, for example if you are applying for a July 2011 departure, your assessment day will fall between March 2011 and May 2011.

What happens on assessment day

The assessment day is a chance for you to check us out and vice versa. GX is a challenge, and it takes up a significant chunk of time. Both parties have to be certain they’re ready to commit.

What we’ll be looking for on the day are the personal qualities that make for good volunteers:
  • Cooperation: The ability to work well with others
  • Sensitivity: An awareness of other people's feelings and needs
  • Enthusiasm: A positive outlook
  • Commitment to learning: Including open-mindedness
  • Adaptability: The ability to adjust well to new situations
The assessment days last from approximately 9am until 4pm. They include:
  • Group dilemmas
You'll take part in a group discussion about a number of issues that may come up during the programme.
  • A task
You'll be asked to work in a team to solve a practical problem.
  • Individual interview
This will cover details of your personal, social and work background. It helps selectors establish whether you're ready to live and work in another culture as a volunteer.
It might sound a little bit daunting, but if you relax it can be a really fun day. It’s a chance for you to start learning more about the programme and to meet other people who you may be spending some time with.
