About GX: International Citizen Service

International Citizen Service (ICS) is a global volunteering experience which supports young people from all backgrounds to make a real difference to some of the world’s poorest people. This new initiative, launched by the Prime Minister in March 2011, and funded by the Department for International Development (DFID), will give thousands of 18-22 year olds across the UK the chance to join in the fight against global poverty.
The International Citizen Service pilot will be delivered by a consortium of six agencies led by VSO, and including Restless Development, Skillshare International, Progressio, International Service and THET (Tropical Health Education Trust).  Between them, these agencies will provide 1250 volunteer placements for young people in 2011/12.

VSO will chair the ICS Steering Group, which will be made of the heads of all six agencies and a representative from DFID.  For more information on the relationship between ICS and VSO, please click here.

Collectively, the ICS agencies work directly with 3,000 international volunteers every year and have partnership networks across over 60 countries.  This provides for a breadth of international experience for volunteers and enables the ICS scheme to support achievement of multiple Millennium Development Goals.
Each of these agencies shares a passionate belief in demonstrating the potential for young people to make a real difference in the world and to develop as active citizens in a stronger global society.

ICS and Global Xchange
ICS provides Global Xchange with the opportunity to harness the power of young people to make a real contribution to development.

In this pilot year, through ICS, GX will offer 420 placements for UK volunteers aged 18-22 to work with an equal number of young people from  11 countries where youth volunteering will complement existing country programmes and bring new opportunities to programme offices and their partners.

Young people who take part in Global Xchange  will have the chance to work on placements that will contribute to delivery of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), through one of two programmes – the 12 week Youth Action or the 24 week Youth Xchange.  It is through the British Council’s continued funding of GX that nine communities across the UK can be engaged in the Youth Xchange programme.
